Full re-thatch
When your thatched roof has reached the end of its life and you are ready to proceed, a full re-thatch will be required. This will include removing the retired weathering layer down to either the preexisting “base coats”, which are previous layers of thatch from times of old, or directly down to the roof timbers. A listed building will require a complete “like for like” replacement of thatch material (unless Listed Building Consent has been approved) to comply with the legalities put into place for the conservation of these ancient buildings and their features. The thatching materials I work with are wheat straw and water reed.
Wheat straw
Also known as combed wheat reed/straw and Devon reed, wheat straws used for thatching today are “long” varieties of wheat. Wheat straw roofs can be found throughout most of the thatching counties, however they are mostly located within the south west of England. Wheat straw presents a golden yellow colour when new and as it matures on your roof it will pass from golden, through a browny ginger and finally to a dark shade.
Water reed
Sometimes referred to as Norfolk reed, water reed is a tall wetland grass. When applied to a roof, the thatch will have a sharper appearance, opposed to the rounder looks of wheat straw. Water reed has a reputation of being the most durable material, however this can strike debate throughout the thatching community.
Ridging
Butt-up and wrap over ridges are the two types of ridge used in the UK to complete our thatched roofs, and wheat straw is the main material used to do so. Ridges are secured using hazel or willow leggers and spars. The ridge can be considered a trademark, so next time you’re passing a thatched roof don’t forget to look up! Repairs
Naturally, as your thatched roof ages, repairs may be necessary. Birds and vermin can also cause damage. If your roof is leaking, repairs will be needed to prevent any further damage to the thatch and to the interior of your property. Repairs can vary in size, subject to what is required.
Porches/Smaller structures
Porches and smaller structures can be an interesting addition to any property. Thatching material is very versatile and if used correctly, can form something beautiful, not only on your home. Gazebos, woodsheds and dove houses are also examples of what I can offer.
Thatch moss removal
Moss removal is recommended. Not only can moss be intimidating to the eye, but it will also trap moisture, which can affect the longevity of your thatch. Upon removing the moss, any repairs needed may present themselves.
Thatch surveys
Most thatch insurance companies will request a survey every 5 years. This is a service I offer, as well as any surveys needed for anybody looking to purchase a thatched property.
Straw finials
Straw finials can be found perched on top of a ridge, or sometimes hidden in the corner of a window. Normally presented as an animal, they have traditionally been believed to have been made from the last sheaf of the straw harvest as a good luck charm for the next.
